Flat Classroom #12: Celebration and Summation

Challenge #12: Celebration and Summation

Do: Participate in a summit for your learning as part of your course or in one of our learning summits as shown in the schedule at www.flatclassroombook.com/ch9. The summit should be recorded and you should have a graphic to present in the on-line classroom as you reflect upon what you’ve learned.

Optional. If you do not have a course or group to present with, recruit three to four people in your learning community to attend your brief on-line presentation in a classroom. Share with them a summary of what you have learned and a celebration of your accomplishment!

Share: Blog about the process of presenting in an on-line classroom and summarize your presentation. Embed your graphic and a link to the recording of the presentation (if available.) Suggest at least one idea for a flat classroom - style project that relates to your content area.

I am continuing the new project that I tested out where the students had to present their final projects to the rest of the 7th grade students as a two day final test of their expertise on their project.

For this project students had to tackle one aspect of the Cold War, research, cover two learning targets, and finally relate what they have learned to the events of today. After giving them time to research and plan(each student filled out their own individual learning target) students then had to create a presentation in which students(the rest of the 300 plus 7th grade students and teachers) would come to them to hear their presentation and learn about their field of expertise. The second day involved being tested and questioned by myself to really see how much they actually know.

Being the end of the year(we are already done) I did not have enough time to create an online community so everything was done in person. However, I feel that the presentations and learning was just as powerful as presenting online. I talked with Julie and she gave me the nod to use this for this challenge.

I think that overall, the project was a success. Time was too short and if students were given maybe one more week they would have done an even greater job. With that being said, we created a mini museum in our auditorium. Students had to get students to come to their station so they could present(they were graded on the amount of students they presented to).

Giving them the chance to pick one aspect of the Cold War to focus on was a positive. I held one on one conversations where I talked with them about the basic information that they are expected to know. We had four meetings where we focused on the specific learning targets so the learning was the same for everyone. However, they needed to go deeper and that is where the independent project came in. They could choose one area of interest and really dive into the topic and learn as much as they can. The unit was not canned. It was open for them to explore their interests.

Overall, the project was successful. We did not allow PowerPoint so many created either a movie or a triboard with replicas. I also hammered them with questions to see if they could make connections to the events of today. Really, that is the point of learning history to bridge the past with today.

I think if we were able to coordinate an online presentation to another audience the students would have taken it to a whole new level. There is something to be said to the focus of students when they have to present to others besides their peers. I have done other online projects and when we speak to other classrooms around the world there is a whole new sense of professionalism that comes into play without me having to really teach it. They want to look good in front of the "unknown" audience.

Next year, I will move this to the online world. Perhaps have them work with others around the country and present to multiple classrooms online and end with some online voting and assessing. This was a great step in the right direction.

Training Week 2 - 5K Race, Running, Dead Legs, and Little Bunnies

Whew! Another busy week of training. I was able to squeeze in 22 miles this week. Not as much as the plan intended, but things took a different route and I actually ran 5 days this week. I typically only run 4 days a week. So let us go ahead and take a look at what all went down.

Monday - I lifted upper body. Still getting body used to lifting weights again. Worked primarily chest. I wanted to get arms in this week, but I failed to do so. This week(week 3) I hope to lift two times. It should be easier to do with it being summer.

Tuesday - We ran 4.5 miles. I felt great for some reason after mile 1 and averaged a 7:34 pace for this run which is my fastest run time yet.

First mile I felt like poop. Legs were tired from runs over the weekend and first week of training, but then I found my stride and felt really good the rest of the run. This was the first time in a very long time where I actually felt good running.
Mile 1: 8:23
Mile 2: 7:45
Mile 3: 7:25
Mile 4: 7:10
Last .5 mile(two .25 speed runs with break between): 6:36 pace

Wednesday -- I woke up to rain and thunder. Went right back to bed because I refuse to run on a treadmill.

Thursday - I ran a 5 mile run where I practiced the 5K race route. I was not able to complete this last weekend so I was determined to finish this time.

I attempted this exact same run this past weekend. The difference was that I had a tough run the day before(I had to stop after 7 miles) and it was super hot. I was not able to run 5 miles. I had to cut things short at mile 4 and did not accomplish my goal.

This morning it was cold. The wind was strong and it sure was tough to get out of bed. I made some adjustments. I was determined to finish this course this morning.

Last time I ran too hard for a warm up so I started off nice and easy running at a 9:16 pace as opposed to a 8:15 pace like last time. By the time I got my 1.5 warm up in I felt okay, not great, but not terrible. I took off for the run of the 5k. At this point in the run it was 13:30 on my watch. When I finished the 3.2 miles I was at 38:40. I ran the 5k in 25 minutes. This is okay by me. I hope to run under 24 on race day so running 25 minutes this morning is good because I ran the first 1.5 of the 5k at a slow rate of 8:15. I did pick up the pace towards the end running miles 4 and 5 (which was the last mile of the 5k and then some additional running) at 7:40 and 7:17. This is good for me to know that I can push a little harder Saturday.

I have not raced since last year. I have actually never ran a 5k before so this is all new to me. I don't quite know how gauge and pace myself. I will stick to my new running philosophy of just going out and run. If the body feels good, then push it, but if not, then scale it back. I think I was getting too wrapped up in numbers and heart rate, etc. that I spent more time number crunching and missing the true joy of running.

I will run again tomorrow and then race Saturday. Keep on living and pushing.

Friday - Today I was going to rest, but my legs were so heavy, sore and tired that I felt I needed to work them out a little. I went out for a super easy, super short run. My legs felt very heavy, sore, and not very loose the day before the race so I went out for a slow run just to see if I could work out some of the kinks in this body of mine. I hope it works. I felt better afterwards and was glad I did this run.

Saturday - The Wild 5K Race

I rather surprised myself this morning. I was up early with Ava and woke up with a terrible stomach ache. After a few cups of coffee I was able to hold steady, but not quite able to fuel the way I had planned in fears of upsetting the tummy.

Ran the race with two great people - You-Dee Punch and Gaffney. The both ran fantastic with Gaffney finishing 4th overall for the females and Uhde running in 21:07 putting him at a 6:49 pace. He has been kicking some serious butt lately.

I ran a PR. I ran the race in 21:27 which I believe is a 6:56 pace. My goal was under 24 minutes and I did much better than what I thought I was capable of. Once again I have proven to myself that I need to listen to more of my body and not my brain.

I am very pleased with my time. I actually finished 3rd in my division of 30-34 so I have a trophy(my first ever and probably last) for my division. The race had over 400 runners, but I think my division was pretty small.

A great start to the weekend. A great start to the summer. A great start to my future races that I have planned this summer.

- 7 mile run at 8:10 pace

Took off for a 5 mile run today to get my mile total to 20 for the week. However, after feeling terrible after the first mile I felt really good and decided to take the longer run route and go for 7. Not sure why I decided to do this. It was perhaps too long.

My legs were sore from the 5K race yesterday, but I know that I need to work on my endurance runs to prepare for the fall with my half marathon and hopefully full marathon. I needed to get at least 20 miles in for the week.

I felt really good, but like an idiot forgot how much the hills kick me in the balls. I about died towards the end of my run. I will show my mile splits and I bet you can't guess which mile contained the hill that about did me in. Along the way this little bunny was sitting on the sidewalk and was questing why this large creature was attempting to run and was so confused it just sat there and never moved. It is the little things that get us through some runs.

Mile 1: 8:23
Mile 2: 8:21
Mile 3: 7:57
Mile 4: 8:00
Mile 5: 7:57
Mile 6: 8:38
Mile 7: 8:00

It is amazing how much more powerful the body is over the brain. I had to fight my mind the last mile to finish.

I question if I did too much as my hamstrings feel tight and the right one almost pulled. This has been four straight days of running and I look forward to giving the legs a rest tomorrow. I just need to get some upper body work done for sure.

Week 3

I feel like I am getting better and better each week. Another big week ahead of me.  I need to get an 8-9 mile run in along with some hill/sprint workouts in. I am in massive need of a rest and a chance to allow my body to regain its composure and strength. Also, trying hard to watch what I eat. Now that I am not in school I have to establish a whole new eating routine and so far that has been hard to do with that the food always staring me down.

Book Review: Book Tour for Misadventures of Phillip Isaac Penn

The Misadventures of Phillip Isaac Penn blog tour has started. I am excited for this because this is my first book tour that I have been asked to take part in. I hope I can be part of another tour.

Here is the complete tour schedule: http://www.cedarfortbooks.com/misadventures-blog-tour/
I share this only because you may find some great new blogs in the list.

Product Description

Everybody calls Phillip Isaac Penn, Pip. And usually they yell it at the top of their lungs. Sure he might forget to close the classroom mice's cage door, or leave his mother's hair dryer in bathtub (hey, it's unplugged), and he might even make it so that Liar Lizzy gets caught, but that doesn't make him bad. It's just not easy being a kid.

My Thoughts

This book is geared towards a younger audience of ages 9-12. I would go so far to market this book at more of the 9 year old level. The book was a very simple read with a pattern that would help most kids understand.

The novel takes the reader through a week in the life of Pip who is a kid who feels so bad for himself because everyone blames him for everything that goes wrong. The problem is that he is guilty 95% of the time. I think younger readers will enjoy the situations that Pip finds himself in, but as an adult I had a hard time feeling sorry for him because he did cause so many problems.

The characters are all flat characters which is typical of this reading level. The teacher is one who is not viewed in the best light. The teacher is a stereotypical character where of course she blames the wrong student. In the event of cheating Pip is blamed despite the fact that the other kid is wrong. We all have these stories from school where we were blamed for something we did not do, but being a teacher myself it does drive me crazy to once again seen teachers not being a good influence on a main character. Why do we always have to be cast to cause nothing but problems and not understand our students? However, for the sake of the storyline this had to happen for it to work. Additionally, younger kids don't think this way and therefore they will relate more.

I really liked the discussion questions at the end. The story covers telling the truth, bullying, and dealing with things out of our control. This part I enjoyed. Pip despite his chaos that he creates does open up some communication channels that we could have with our kids about telling the truth, dealing with others who don't treat us nice, and just learning to deal with the obstacles of life.

This was a very quick read with only about 96 pages. I think this is a good book for a much younger audience.

I wish the author great luck with her book and hope she has good success. I am glad to be part of the tour and asked to read the book. It was a nice change of pace from what I have been reading and enjoyed taking part.

Summer Goal #1 Up For Testing Tomorrow

Well, the first day of summer(school ended yesterday).

What did I do with all my time?

Amanda and I were up for several hours with Ava who decided to spread her joy at night.

I mowed the yard. We cleaned the house. I sat on my butt and felt tired.

I finally got up and did a short run to help my legs as they felt very tired, heavy, and sore.

Tomorrow morning at 8:00 I will be running my first race of the season.

It is a 5K race. I have never ran a 5K race before so I am not quite sure how I will respond.

My goal is to finish under 24 minutes with hopes of doing much better than 24 minutes. Everything is dependent on how I feel. This is only my second week back in the training mode preparing for a half marathon and perhaps that darn marathon goal of mine.

My first goal is up for grabs. This is one of many goals I have set for myself this summer.

What are your goals? Feel free so share and let me know when you complete a goal so we can all celebrate with you.

Wish me luck at the race. Keep striving for your very best.

Today is the Last Day of School

We did it. We survived yet another year.

I had some great things happen this year.

My students accomplished some amazing things both in my classroom and outside the classroom.

I am ready for a break. My brain is fried. I have used up all my patience and it is time to step back and recharge my batteries for another year.

I already have 3 big new ideas that I am ready to unveil next year. I cannot wait to get started, but first I need to refuel before embarking on another great year of teaching next year.

As I type this I cannot help but think how important it is for us to sometimes take step back and just recharge ourselves. Whether it is to step back from our hobbies, our passions, sports, job, etc.

I know right now I am trying to read some great books, but it feels like work. I am trying to set up some new projects on my blog and it feels like work. All this "work" and things are not enjoyable anymore.

I will step back. I will hang with my family. I will sit on my deck and relax. I will train for my races. I will get back to a place where nothing seems like "work" anymore, but rather it will all be fun.

Life is too short to "work". Life is perfect to pursue our passions and interests.

Live on and let summer begin.

Coffeechug Concepts Podcast Ideas

I have fallen behind on my podcast series.

Coffeechug Concepts Podcast is officially available on iTunes. I know about anybody can get accepted, but it sure makes me feel good.

Anyways, I have been working on some topics for my next few podcasts and just thought I would throw the bait out to see if anyone wanted to chomp at the bit and suggest a few other topic ideas.

I am open to about anything.

Otherwise, I will continue with nerdy rants.

I leave you with a lyric, can you find out where it is from?

Book Review: Enclave by Ann Aguirre

7Author Website: http://www.annaguirre.com/

Blurb from her website

WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE
In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.
As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.
Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.
As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.

My Thoughts

I have been so excited to read this novel. I heard wonderful things about the book. I was anxiously waiting for it to turn in at my library and finally it was my time to read it. Prior to reading the book I had read several reviews and the latter ones started to not paint a very good image of the book.

I became torn. I love dystopian novels. I know the market is becoming saturated in this genre, but due to some reviews I read I was hesitant to read the book. I have a massive stack of books to read. I was stressing about getting them all read in time and know I have to decided on a few I just won't have time to read.

I posted to Twitter and heard no reply about the book so I decided to give it a try and form my own opinion.

I am so glad I gave it a try.

I could not put this book down. It had a slow start for me. The whole underground scene was cool, but was not an atmosphere I enjoyed. I hate closed environments as I am claustrophobic. However, as I continued to read and understand the enclave and the system put into place I became intrigued. I wanted to know why this happened and more importantly what was the twist going to be that causes this book to take off.

It did not take long for me to discover the adventure put into place into this desolate world after the aftermath of a major catastrophe. Deuce is forced to choose a way of life away from the Enclave. From this moment on I was immersed. The book was beyond great.

I really enjoyed all the characters. Deuce was very likable. She was not whiny, but a tough girl who fights for survival. Fade is another character I quite enjoyed reading about. He is tough with an interesting past. There are several other characters(I won't mention so I don't ruin the story) that really help move the story along.

I am dying for the sequel. It just leaves you hanging like YA novels are known to do in a series. This is the best YA dystopian novel I have read so far this year. I know I have not read them all, but this one is well worth the time to read.

I really liked the setting(in some ways it reminded me of The Road by Cormac McCarthy in terms of setting. It was so desolate. Yes, there are Freaks, but I am not sure what they are....mutated zombies of some nature.

What really impressed me at the end of the novel was the author sharing the articles and reasons for the choices she made in the story. I was very fascinated reading about life after an apocalypse and these resources further sealed my love for the book and author.

Great action, great storyline, and great characters all lead to a promising series by Ann Aguirre

Book Review: The Alchemist by Paolo Bacigalupi

Product Description

Magic has a price. But someone else will pay. Every time a spell is cast, a bit of bramble sprouts, sending up tangling vines, bloody thorns, and threatening a poisonous sleep. It sprouts in tilled fields and in neighbors' roof beams, thrusts up from between street cobbles, and bursts forth from sacks of powdered spice. A bit of magic, and bramble follows. A little at first, and then more--until whole cities are dragged down under tangling vines and empires lie dead, ruins choked by bramble forest. Monuments to people who loved magic too much.

In paired novellas, award-winning authors Tobias Buckell and Paolo Bacigalupi explore a shared world where magic is forbidden and its use is rewarded with the axe. A world of glittering memories and a desperate present, where everyone uses a little magic, and someone else always pays the price.

In the beleageured city of Khaim, a lone alchemist seeks a solution to a deadly threat. The bramble, a plant that feeds upon magic, now presses upon Khaim, nourished by the furtive spellcasting of its inhabitants and
threatening to strangle the city under poisonous vines. Driven by desperation and genius, the alchemist constructs a device that transcends magic, unlocking the mysteries of bramble s essential nature. But the power of his newly-built balanthast is even greater than he dreamed. Where he sought to save a city
and its people, the balanthast has the potential to save the world entire--if it doesn t destroy him and his family first.

My Thoughts

LOVED IT!! I just had to read this book after reading The Executioness by Tobias Buckell which is the paired novella to this one. I reviewed Executioness about a week ago.

Like Tobias Buckell, this is my first time reading Paolo Bacigalupi and like Tobias, Paolo has just gained another huge fan. I know of the others work by Paolo, but just have not had time to read the books. After reading this I am going to read through all the works.

I was hooked right away with the storyline. The pain and heartbreak of the opening scene where Jiala has to lose the bed just grabbed me by chest. I never gave much thought to a bed until this story, but I could not imagine having my bed taken from me. This was the key ingredient to me loving this story. Paolo took an item that everyone has and made it relatable to understand what was happening in a few pages.

Having already read the over novella I understood the bramble and the use of magic. This helped me relate to the story even more than if it was my first read of the pairs.

Being a novella, it was short. I do hope and pray they revisit this world and write a full length novel. There is so much that could be developed.

The story just jumped off the pages to me. I was engaged in the events that I was actually angry when certain things developed.

You have to read this novella along with the other one. You will not be disappointed. It might be short on words and pages, but not in story.

This novella was nominated for the Nebula Awards.

I cannot wait to enter the other worlds created by Paolo Bacigalupi.

Flat Classroom: Challenge #11: Align Your Project to Standards

Challenge #11: Align Your Project to Standards

Do after: Module 5 Choice and Creation

Do: Using the project you created in Challenge #10, revise the project plan based upon what you have learned and to align the project objectives with your course or another set of standards such as the ISTE Nets standards or the 21st Century Learning Literacies.

Share: Update your posting on Curriki or your blog to include standards alignment and revisions. Reflect on your blog on the process of aligning with standards and what you have learned from this process.

To be honest, there were not any revisions made to this project. The project was designed with the standards and benchmarks in mind. In our ELP program (gifted and talented) we use the George Bett’s Autonomous Learner Model. The final piece to the model is an independent study portion where students pursue their passions. This project is used in grades 4-8. As they progress through the years they are expected to continue to pursue higher levels of engagement.

At the elementary level we tailored the independent study to the Quad Cities. This gave the students a focus, but allowed them to still learn about their passions and interests. The whole project can be found here: http://coffeechug.wikispaces.com/2010-2011+4th+and+5th+Grade+Independent+Study+-+Exploration+of+the+Quad+Cities

Here are the standards used for the 21st Century Skils for this unit

In my district we are in the process of having every single unit taught uploaded to this massive online program called Instruction Planner which is part of this district wide model where we can see what every subject and at any grade level is working on. This will allow us to work on vertical articulation across the schools to ensure there are not gaps. It is a very tedious process and time consuming in addition to everything else we have to do, but in the end it will be worthwile.

Because of this professional development that we are doing I already had most of this in place. As we plan our unit, we have to know our standards and benchmarks ahead of time to make sure that as we teach we are hitting upon the necessary ones in our classroom.

Book Review: Skeleton Creek 4: The Raven

Title: The Raven
Author: Patrick Carman
Author Website: http://www.patrickcarman.com/

From his website
The Raven

Ryan and Sarah have solved old mysteries. They’ve followed clues all over the country and underground. They’ve investigated secret societies. They’ve found their answers.

Or so they thought. Because there are still some secrets that Ryan and Sarah haven’t uncovered yet. And there’s still a shadowy figure standing in their path…someone who doesn’t want Ryan and Sarah digging up any more of the past.

My Thoughts
This book came in at the library and I had to snatch it up quick as I just read book 3 in the series. This is the final book of the series(at least I think?).

I read the book in about a day. I probably sound like a broken record if you have read my other reviews in this series, but the videos were pretty good. I thought they were better than book 3 for sure. I still think book 1 was the best. Those videos creeped me out. I am sure part of this was become it was something new and unexpected, but also I felt the suspense was top notch.

With the last two books in the series I really missed seeing the characters. In book 1 and 2 you were able to see Sarah and Ryan. I missed being able to see them. I don't know why they chose to eliminate them in the videos(perhaps the original cast was not available or something), but I felt that really added a personal element. I lost my connection with the characters. I always liked seeing Sarah talk before showing her video. With that being said, I still really enjoyed reading this book. I always looked forward to the videos and they still made sit at the edge of my seat.

I don't want to ruin the ending, but I am interested to see if this is the end or an opportunity to continue a new series. I did not expect the ending. I thought something completely different was going to occur.

**A POSSIBLE SPOILER** Scroll past to *END SPOILER*
I really thought the father of Ryan would have played a larger role in the novel. He seemed to be on the edge of an important character and he just fell off the face of the earth in this novel. Not sure why, but I always assumed he would be associated with more than what he was at the end. He was part of the Crossbones or least was aware of it and nothing ever developed.
**END SPOILER**

I think that the targeted age group for this book series will love this book. I know they will. Once again I found myself using Google to look up some of the locations and learning a little bit more. Being that I am older and really looking at the book with a more critical eye, I was frustrated with the development of Sarah. One thing that drove me nuts was that they were so careful of her driving and talking on her cell phone, but there was no real concern for her to be driving thousands of miles on her own. For someone who is digging up graves you would think talking on the phone would not phase her. Also, if her parents were so concerned for her and where she was heading, wouldn't they not figure out she was all over the place when they look at the odometer? Once again, silly little details that students who read this book would probably not care about, but for some reason stood out to me.

Don't get me wrong here. I enjoyed this book. Maybe after reading four of the books in the series I have had my fill. The system was always the same in each book(which is what students love). Sarah was the dare devil out and about capturing the crazy things while Ryan was the one who was scared to do anything but write in his journal. But in the end it was always up to him to capture that final essential piece and bring the town and storyline to a close.

This series is a winner. It is one that my own kids will read when they get older. I know that once you read book 1 you will find yourself moving right through the series. Book 4 lost some steam for my own personal reasons, but it had nothing to do with the writing or ideas. If you have not read this series, then you are missing out on a great set of books that will hook any reader ages 9-12. I cannot wait to see what Patrick Carman creates next.

Book Journey: Game of Thrones - Reading Update #2

About a week ago I started reading Game of Thrones. Being that this does not read like a YA novel(which is what I typically read) I decided to post my thoughts throughout the read. I posted my initial thoughts on the first hundred pages or so.

At this point I am about 40% through the book at page 327.

I love this book. I am absorbed and love it. I cannot stop reading it. The problem is that I don't have much time to read between getting caught up in all my work after taking a week off, having a new baby who likes to stay up all night, and finding time for my other two kids.

With that being said I am still reading. I have so many great books that came in at the library(go figure they come in when I don't have time....where were you books last week while I was in the hospital?) and don't think I can put this book down to read them before returning.

The plot lines are getting intense. There are so many backstabbing story line developing. I am not sure who is good. Actually, that is what I like so much about the book. Unlike YA, these characters have moments of good, but are human and are bad as well. Nobody is a "perfect" character. Right when you start to like a character you find out a possible scenario that makes them unlikable.

I am finally getting a grasp of alliances and who belongs to what family line while reading. I don't have to reference the back as much. I did print off a family tree guide provided by HBO for the TV series.

I love the imp, Tyrion. I don't know why, but I always know we are in for something interesting when he is around. I don't want to post any spoilers so I will stay away from talking plot here in the post.

I have marked some passages. I find them to hold some great ideas and truths to life. Here are a few that I really liked and stood out to me. Don't worry, no spoilers.

"Every flight begins with a fall." - from the crow
So true. This was relevant as my kids are trying to learn how to ride their bikes.

"Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?"........"That is the only time a man can be brave."

"All men are made of water, do you know this? When you pierce them, the water leaks out and they die." This stood out to me not only as a battle strategy, but in life. We are all vulnerable and can be pierced if we don't protect ourselves. I just really liked this quote.

This one cracks me up. This is in reference to the singing abilities of a character. "Pyp says his voice is piss poured over a fart."

I am obsessed. I think I will be reading this whole series this summer. I will have to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next. My new nerdy soap opera.

Book Review: Skeleton Creek 3: Crossbones

Title: Skeleton Creek 3: Crossbones
Author: Patrick Carman
Website: http://www.patrickcarman.com/

From his website:

The Crossbones

Ryan and Sarah Have solved one mystery . . . only to find themselves trapped by another. At first it seemed that the crossbones was a secret society limited to Skeleton Creek. But now new facts are being unearthed — with new dangers attached.

My Thoughts

For anyone who follows my blog and my book reviews you know that I love Patrick Carman. I have nothing but positive things to say about his previous works. Here are some previous reviews.

Skeleton Creek: Ghost in the Machine
Trackers
Thirteen Days to Midnight

After finally getting hold of a copy of Skeleton Creek 4: The Raven I had to refresh my knowledge of this series. It has been some time since I read books 1 and 2. During that time I realized I never read book 3. I have no idea why I waited. Late last night while my newborn daughter was awake I began reading Crossbones. I had to pause and wait until early morning hours to finish, but needless to say this was another page turner that I finished in less than a day.

If you have read the series than you know that Ryan and Sarah attempt to solve all the mysteries that have unfolded since their first encounter with the Dredge. This books really expands the storyline involving Sarah traveling all over the states and documenting footage. Anytime you expand the world of a series it is always hard for me because I get used to a place/location. I had a hard time at first welcoming the idea of the clues being so spread out, but it works. It works well.

The storyline I enjoyed as it brings in historical presidents and people along with other haunted locations. I can see students investigating some of these places in further detail after reading.

I don't know why, but even though the videos were not as spooky as the first two books, I was still scared. These video clips always freak me out. I sit there expecting the worst and late last night I had to stop reading so I could sleep.

Yes, I recommend this book. If you have not read the first two books, then start there because you don't want to miss out on the storyline. As soon as I publish this review I am going to begin The Raven because I have to know what happens and what they find out.

Patrick Carman has once again delivered and not let his fans down in this next installment.

Music Journey: Pearl Jam - Stop #1: Ten - Alive, Why, Black

The journey continues with track #3 "Alive"

This song tells a story. A story that many can relate to. This song slows things up a little bit after the first two jams. This is a sing a long song for sure.

The chorus always has me singing at the top of my lungs "I'm still alive"

The most powerful lyrics come right after the nice little solo piece when Eddie sings:

"Is something wrong?" she said
Of course there is
"You're still alive," she said
Oh, and do I deserve to be?
Is that the question?
And if so...if so...who answers...who answers...?

WOW! And to hear Eddie sing these words really makes you want to sit in your bedroom and journal and ponder "Do I deserve to be?" As an adult I don't have the same thoughts as I did growing up(thank goodness), but these lyrics are still ones to be processed. Who gets to decide?

Don't forget the unbelievable guitar to end this song. It just builds up and ends with a smack to the face to get you ready for "Why Go"

Why Go probably one of the lesser known tracks on this album, but not any less of a song. Just as Eddie winds down on "Alive" the drums kick in for this track, followed by the guitars and we take off again on another ride. Eddie is angry. The music is angry and it just adds more fuel. Love it and of course you have to sing along with the the line, "Why go home?" And yes another guitar solo and will rock your socks.

From this jam we move onto "Black". A nice slow, mellow vibe. Acoustic and Eddie to start and just a another song that grabs you and takes you on another little ride.

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Her legs spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed Everything...

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be...yeah...
Uh huh...uh huh...ooh...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why, why, why
Can't it be, can't it be mine

Music Journey: Pearl Jam - Stop #1: Ten - Once and Even Flow

The memories this cd brings back to me. I had this on cassette tape. I listened to this tape nonstop all day everyday growing up. I remember singing at the top of my lungs to this tape while in the shower as if the water could help my vocals sound like Eddie Vedder.

Is it not amazing how singing in the shower or car you have those moments when you feel like you are really singing as good as the lead singer?

This album starts off with "Once"

Could you not ask for a better opener with the slow build up to start which is like getting in a little jog to loosen up the joints for a long run. Then, "BOOM" Eddie starts singing and the guitars take off.

"Once upon a time I could lose myself". Such great lyrics. The ending with Eddie singing, "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" is such a great closer and prepares your for the beautiful track "Even Flow"

I have to pause my music because I cannot listen and type at the same time.

How did I not add "Even Flow" to my favorite PJ song on my earlier post? Am I stupid. This was the song that I used to think I sounded like Eddie.

Once again very simple lyrics that can be read in a multitude of ways.

Freezin', rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again.
Oh, feelin' maybe he'll see a little better set a days, ooh yeah
Oh hand out faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar, ooh yeah
Oh, dark grin he can't help when he's happy, looks insane ooh

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know so he chases them away-yeah
Oh, someday, yea, he'll begin his life again
Life again, Life again

Kneeling, looking through the paper though he doesn't know to read, ooh yeah
Oh, praying now to something that has never showed him anything
Oh, feeling understands the weather of the winters on its way
Oh, ceilings few and far between all the legal halls of shame, hey

The guitar is awesome in this song. Eddie once again delivers big time. I used to play the guitar during the verse portion of this song. I wish I knew how to play.

As you can tell this cd is a personal favorite of mine. Everyone has those albums that you know by heart no matter how long it has been since the last listen. This album is one of them. For personal reasons and just the fact of growing up this album was always a source of release. (Pause) I love the end solo on this song. Sorry I lost my focus

I will end this post here and continue on with some more thoughts and insights into this album tomorrow.

Pearl Jam: Reissues and Festival

Oh yes, I want this. Oh yes, I will have this.

You cannot go wrong with Pearl Jam. The guitar, the lyrics. There is so much to the music. Yet, you don't have to go deep to enjoy PJ.

Since I am broke this summer after a new roof and baby, the Dave Matthews Caravan is out of my summer plans. The three day festival I estimated will cost me about $900 when all said and done.

However, I still need my live music fix. Pearl Jam is going to host a festival. I may have to look into this if they ever unveil the date and location.

I am getting distracted here.

What I want to know is - What is your favorite song and why of Pearl Jam?

My two personal favorites are Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town and of course the blazing song Evolution.

But, Betterman is so unstoppable along with any song from Ten.

I think it is time to start a music journey and go through each album again.

This weekend I will start with Ten. Feel free to join me.

Story from Paulo Coelho blog and my reflections

http://paulocoelhoblog.com/2011/04/26/20-sec-reading-the-asylum/

A story by Kahlil Gibran

I was strolling in the gardens of an insane asylum when I met a young man who was reading a philosophy book.

His behavior and his evident good health made him stand out from the other inmates.

I sat down beside him and asked:

‘What are you doing here?’

He looked at me, surprised. But seeing that I was not one of the doctors, he replied:

‘It’s very simple. My father, a brilliant lawyer, wanted me to be like him.
“My uncle, who owns a large emporium, hoped I would follow his example.
“My mother wanted me to be the image of her beloved father.
“My sister always set her husband before me as an example of the successful man.
“My brother tried to train me up to be a fine athlete like himself.

“And the same thing happened at school, with the piano teacher and the English teacher – they were all convinced and determined that they were the best possible example to follow.
“None of them looked at me as one should look at a man, but as if they were looking in a mirror.

“So I decided to enter this asylum. At least here I can be myself.’

This story just strikes a chord with me. It almost haunts me. How much truth is in this? As parents it takes a lot of willpower to not force your kids to be like you. Do you know how much it kills me to see my son have zero interest in sports? Yes, I could force him into everything, but why would I do this. He is such a cool kid with a passion for the outdoors, bugs, animals, and just building things.

As a teacher, we have to try our hardest to keep students engaged. We must not try to convey that we are the best, but simply one more element in their lives to make them find themselves.

As a teacher I realize how easy it is to think that what we are teaching is the most important. However, when we take a step back we are not the most important. As a whole institution we are  important, but not independently and as a sole individual.

Think about all the ways in which we are pulled as adults. Multiply that by about 10 and we are back in middle school and high school. I think what is most important for us to do is not pull, but rather offer structure to help the youth find their way without losing their vision of themselves. The ones that lose their vision of where they want to be are the ones that find themselves in a whirlwind.

Offer guidance, but not by grabbing shirtsleeves and feeling that we are the most important. We are just one pebble in the river my good friends.

Book Review: Executioness by Tobias Buckell

Magic has a price.

In Khaim, that price is your head if you're found using it. For the use of magic comes with a side effect: it creates bramble. The bramble is a creeping, choking menace that has covered majestic ancient cities, and felled civilizations. In order to prevent the spread of the bramble, many lose their heads to the cloaked executioners of Khaim.

Tana is one of these executioners, taking the job over from her ailing father in secret, desperate to keep her family from starvation. But now her family has been captured by raiders, and taken to a foreign city.

So Khaim's only female executioner begins a quest to bring her family back together. A bloody quest that will change lives, cities, and even an entire land, forever. A quest that will create the legend of The Executioness.

My Thoughts

Author Site: http://www.tobiasbuckell.com/

Tobias Buckell you have just grabbed a new fan. I read this book/novella the other day. I loved it. This was fantastic. I wish it was longer. I hope it will be expanded. I love the idea of a mother in her mid life being a tough main character. I read an interview with him(I cannot find it anymore to share a link), but they were talking about how the idea started.

I know the book is short at only 104 pages, but loved every page. I have plans to read his work after I finish Game of Thrones. The action was good. The storyline was great. I cannot wait to read Alchemist by Paolo Bacigalupi to read another story in this universe.

What I liked about the book was that the main character was someone new and different. It was not some orphan boy or a wizard with a love that was lost in their past. Tana has no choice but to take on the work of her father to keep the house and her boys alive. This just leads to all the adventures that ensue. It was refreshing to me. It was a different set up and it worked for me.

I don't know what the Alchemist is about, but I look forward to comparing and hopefully a full length novel will come out by Tobias. In the meantime, check this short read out. It is well worth it.

Courage: Try Something New and Surprise Yourself

I am back at it.

I have been courageous in my classroom trying new projects and ideas.

This courage and experiments have lead to so many great(possibly) ideas to try next year I am so glad I was not chicken.

Don't be afraid to try something new. If you are worried about the result or how people/students will respond, then tell them upfront what is going to be happening.

I am moving the courage into my regular life as well. This last Monday was the start to a new life. A new life with my new daughter Ava and trying to find the balance to give individual attention to my three kids and wife.

I also need to give attention to myself. This is where courage comes in.

Courage to get up each and every morning to begin my training that I left on the side of the curb about four weeks ago.

Courage to push through the pain and suffering of training to become better in running.

Courage to eat healthy(not eat 8 cookies in teacher lounge because they are calling my name).

Courage to fight through the wonderful night of sleep with a newborn.(note of sarcasm)

Courage to push myself past my own expectations. Like most of you(just a guess) I have that fear of what I am capable of actually achieving if I would just push past that mental barrier.

Just remember the story of Chuck Norris

When Chuck was in middle school, his English teacher assigned an essay: "What is courage?" Chuck received an A+ for turning in a blank page with only his name at the top.

That will be my essay once I push through my 5 races this summer/fall.

Where is your courage?

Coke Machine of Happiness

I love this video. So simple, but yet is spreads so much happiness.

I am not going to ramble this time because it is not necessary.

What are you providing each day to help spread happiness to those around you?

I think if we took time each day to work on spreading happiness we would be amazed at how quickly it would spread. This would only takes seconds each day.

This goes back to my first podcast about taking the time to not cast a critical eye, but to show your happiness and appreciation for others.

About No Hope for Gomez!

It's the age-old tale:

 -   Boy meets girl.
 -   Boy stalks girl.
 -   Girl already has a stalker.
 -   Boy becomes her stalker-stalker.

We've seen it all before, many times, but this time it's different. If only slightly.

When Gomez Porter becomes a test subject in an experimental drug trial, he is asked to keep track of any strange experiences through a blog.

What Gomez isn't ready for, is so many of his experiences suddenly seeming strange; the antiques dealer trying to buy his old tax papers, the phone-sex salesman who hounds him day and night, the super sexy lab assistant who falls for him but is unable to express herself in terms outside the realm of science.

But when one of the trial participants turns up dead and another goes missing, Gomez begins to fear for his life. No longer sure who he can trust and which of his experiences are real and which merely drug induced delusions, he decides it's time to go underground and work out a devious plan.
Read a chapter.

Guest Post: Is It Like Listening To You Talk? Graham Parke

Is It Like Listening To You Talk?

As you probably know, to become an internationally best-selling author, you need to sell three books. This is not an easy task, but once you’ve managed to rack up these three sales, the rest is more or less a done deal.

Now, these sales themselves will not put you on the best-seller lists. They won’t even put you within a million spots of the bottom of the lists, but what they will do, and what they do every time, is spark a slowly growing buying frenzy that will get you there.

These three people will love your book, they will tell another five people, who in turn tell another seven. Within roughly four-and-a-half weeks, you finally make your first million.
That’s how it happens. Every single time.

But, how does an author tackle this monumental task? Where does he find these three readers?

I myself was quite lucky. When my novel appeared on Amazon I already knew over five people! What’s more, some of these people even liked me... somewhat. So I set out to become an internationally best-selling author by convincing at least three of these five people to buy my novel.

I started with my mother. Of all the five people I knew, I probably knew her the longest. I showed her my Amazon page and she nodded approvingly. She did not, however, make any attempts to buy a copy. So I logged on for her, navigated back to my novel’s page, and left the mouse pointer conveniently positioned over the BUY button.

She read the novel description again, searched-inside-this-book, and nodded some more. When I asked her if she’d like to buy a copy, she scrunched up her nose and said;

‘But what if I don’t like it?’
I told her not to worry. ‘It’s a really good book,’ I said. ‘I should know. I’ve re-written it like 50 times. It’s really funny and interesting.’
My mother wasn’t convinced. ‘I’m not really into comedy writing, though,’ she said.
‘It’s not just a comedy,’ I pointed out. ‘It has a real story; it’s a mystery. And it has twists and turns and believable characters.’
My mother hesitated. ‘Maybe I should just play it safe and buy another Stephen King novel…’

I ended up having to offer a personal money-back guarantee, and purchase a copy using my own credit card for the time being, but she finally cracked. I’d made my first sale!

Next, I prodded my wife. Although she did like words in general, she wasn’t sure she was up for reading and entire book full of them. ‘Is this like your usual stuff?’ she wanted to know.
‘What usual stuff?’
She shrugged. ‘I don’t know. Is it like listening to you talk?’
‘What’s wrong with they way I talk?’
‘Nothing. It’s just, well, sometimes you talk a lot of nonsense.’
I waved it away. ‘Don’t worry,’ I said. ‘I am much more interesting and ‘telligible’ on paper.’

Long story short; my second sale is almost in the bag. Now I just need to find one more person to buy my novel, and I’ll be set for life!

Training - Week 1 - Midweek Report

I jumped back on the saddle this week.

No more excuses. I have plans to run 5 races this fall and summer.

Monday we lifted weights in which we have not done in quite some time. I am still very sore this morning especially my legs after doing squats.

Tuesday we jumped out for a 4 mile run. It was cold in the morning at 5 am.  Being only my second run in two weeks time I knew I was going to hit a wall. A wall I did hit. I ran the 4 miles in 32 minutes with a 7:51 mile pace. We started off at a pace I could keep up dialing in mile one at 8:21 and mile 2 at 7:54. At mile 2 my body started to shut down. I knew it was coming, but I fought through it while my racing buds took and left me in their dust. I ran mile 3 in 7:38 and mile 4 at 7:30 in which I thought I was going to throw up. It is not wise to eat right before a run when have not ran in a while.

Wednesday I woke up sore. Actually I was up since about 3 am as Ava was up and Amanda(god bless her soul) was taking care of her. However, I am not one who can go back to sleep easily and every time I heard Ava I was awake. Go figure that Ava finally goes to sleep at 4:33 which is 2 minutes before my alarm. I got out of bed and head to the Y.

We wanted to run a little over 4 miles today. We were all tired and sore from running, lifting, and other activities. We started slow running mile 1 at 8:48 and mile 2 at 8:18. Mile 3 we were still moving pretty slow at 7:46, but then for some reason we decided to push that part of the run. I was left behind, but ran mile 4 in 7:14 and was running a 7:03 pace for the last .4 of my run putting my 4.4 mile run in at 34 minutes.

Things are getting better. I am slowly getting my running stride back, but still have a long ways to go.

Keep pushing forward everyone.

Coffeechug Concepts Diigo Updates 05/17/2011

Posted from Diigo. The rest of my favorite links are here.

40 Book Give Away Winner(s) - Everyone Wins!!!

Yesterday I was supposed to announce the winner of my 40 Book Give Away Contest.

That did not happen yesterday as I was confused. I needed to find a way to make this contest end on a good note.

See the problem is that I had four entries. That is small(which is not the problem), but I felt bad trying to declare only one winner out of four.

I sorted the books. I organized. I pondered.

I have decided to make them all winners. After all these students found time at the end of the school year when their brains shut down, the thoughts turn to mush, and it is like squeezing blood out of a turnip to get much from them with only a week to go in the school year.

The top three will all receive the same 40 books. The fourth place winner will receive 37 books as I am short on three copies. Regardless they still are earning a hefty prize.

Nothing makes me feel better than delivering 157 books to four outstanding students.

I hope they read and spread the books around so others can enjoy.

Here are the winners and their stories. I would love it if you would take time to read their stories and leave some comments for them. Nothing is better than being appreciated for your work. Especially when you are middle school student who is just begging for summer to begin.

Title of Story - Idea Room

Four walls. One floor. One hundred and forty-four square feet.

It was a small room containing so much inspiration.

This was where all the ideas came into being. Where all the rampant thoughts arranged themselves into a line; where they aligned. This was the place where the magical contents of a book were created.

This charming, homely place of mystery, where the stars fell from the sapphire sky when it was cold enough. Because of the lack of ceiling, they landed right in the palm of her hand. She would put them in her eyes and bite her lip because it hurt at first. Then, the pain would subside, and she would see the room in a new light. She could see the airplanes passing overhead through her new makeshift spyglasses. The passengers seemed mystified by the spectacle all those miles below. She smiled at them and waved, though they couldn't see her, only the white, topless box in the middle of nowhere.

When they passed, she would blink the stars from her eyes, and dance around the room in a mask. Sometimes it was smiling, if by chance one of the travelers saw her and waved back, but most often it was frowning, for no one knew that she was down here, all alone.

Beside the fishbowl on the table, there was a magnifying glass. This was the only trinket that she had with her when she came to this land of divine guidance. She often looked at her hands through this glass, studying the minuscule crevices and the perplexing shadows. After the stars fell from her eyes, the chill would still linger, and her breath would fog up the lens so she could not see her skin.

The stars would decay when the sun receded into the horizon. They traveled, invisible, back to the moon and left her until the next frost night.

Without the glow from her small tokens, she would have to pull the beaded chain, turning on the series of light bulbs around the room. The white room was illuminated by yellow, and for a moment, all was scared away by the industrial lighting. She would have to lay still, because the ideas were not flooding in anymore. Then, they would pick up as she got used to the light, and she would dance around some more.

Eventually, the lights would wear themselves out. They would begin to dim, and she would steadily stop dancing. She would sink below the table and curl in on herself. The scales on the other side of the room, eternally lopsided and perpetually empty, watched over her with their nonexistence. She would lay in the dark for hours, counting sheep until she ran out. Her humanity got the better of her, and her eyes would shut. She would dream of all the ideas of the patrons of the world, whom she had never met and never would. She dreamt of them living by the mountain that looked like four men, whom many thought about. The Mountain of Rushmore, she thought it was called. She dreamt of them in the land where the Tower of Eiffel stood. All the lovers sent her hopes of going there with someone special. She dreamt of the land lost in time and sand, where the Pyramids of Giza stood, guarded by a creature with the face of a man and the body of a cat. It was all so spectacular that she could hardly stand it, and would wake up almost immediately. The sun would be coming up again. She bid the stars farewell and repeated the cycle like she had since the beginning of time.

Fred the Sheep

Once upon a time, there was an extremely intellectual sheep named Fred. Fred lived in a magical place named Ontario. Fred loved it in Ontario, but he felt like something was missing. “What is it?” Fred would wonder, “Why do I feel so lonely and incomplete? I live in a wonderful place, with wonderful friends!” Soon, Fred fell into a deep depression. Al l that he was could do was watch Law and Order: SVU (his favorite show) and eat Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. His friends, quickly realizing this obesity-inducing behavior, immediately started him on some anti-depression medication. This made him quit his B&J binge, but he still was in love SVU. Refusing to give it up, his mother confiscated his T.V. Unluckily for Fred, he was still at work being a judge for a local reality show, and his mom also took a sledge hammer to it. Upon arriving at home, Fred discovered his television in ruins and his TiVo deleted. Anger induced Fred as he frantically transformed into a child and threw a fit. His mother, who got tired of fits when he was a toddler, sarcastically mentioned that he should go on Broadway. “Maybe then,” she shrieked, “you can put this diva behavior to good use!” Well, that just sparked and idea in Fred’s simple and little sheep mind. He immediately went on Google and bought some acting books from eBay. He also went out and bought a toupee to cover up the spot of wool that was quickly disappearing from the back of his head. After getting his bags packed and his toupee pinned on, Fred rode his bike to the airport and bought a ticket. A ticket to Los Angeles, that is.

The plane ride to L.A. was uneventful, besides Fred making good use of the vomit bag, and soon the trip was over. As Fred dragged his five duffel bags through LAX, he had stars in his eyes. Literally. Someone had thrown a fistful of glitter in his face, and he glanced over to see who it was. Naturally, the glitter-thrower was Lady Gaga. He should have known by the click-clacking of her seventeen inch heels on the tile flooring. Shooting her a dirty look, Fred dusted his wool off, and was on his way out the door. Heat blasted his face as he squinted his eyes against the smog; it was thick enough to give Fred the image that people were actually walking on clouds. “Wow. They know how to roll in L.A.” he muttered to himself as he strolled to the nearest cab. But confusion overtook him as he tried to tell the cabbie where to go. The driver seemed to have trouble with is Canadian terminology. “I don’t know how far ‘Aboot’ is!” he shouted. Then, as they do in the land of catfights, the rude cabbie pushed Fred out of the cab. As Fred rolled down the highway towards The Hills, he scratched his head in confusion. It was going to be a long vacation if no one understands him. He came to a stop, after bouncing off of a building. Standing up, Fred looked up at the sign. MapleLeaf Acting. Just what he needed; a room full of people with just as nauseating accents as him. Fred skipped through the door and took a seat. After receiving a boat load of paperwork, Fred tackled the mystery of remembering his new Social Security number. Luckily for him, lots of people were eager to get him signed, and the paperwork was soon tossed.

Fred fell in love with the acting business, and was quickly devoted to it. He took every job he could; he even took a job as a backup dancer for the “Walk like an Egyptian” music video. It was a good job, which made every producer in town want Fred. He soon became rich, and proceeded to buy the Justin Bieber franchise. Now, Fred lives happily in his million-dollar home with Megan Fox. He has everything he wants, including the ShakeWeight for Men that he had been lusting over back in Canada. Fred loves his life, and constantly gloats to his ex-friends in Ontario. Now he can eat all the Ben and Jerry’s he wants.

Jojo the lamb was a very happy lamb. He lived in Egypt by the pyramids. Jojo was tired of life as a boring lamb. He had an idea to do something be big, he wanted to be an actor. So, he flew in a plane to California. He went to Hollywood and found a mystery that he wanted to tried out for. He loved the script, it was based off a Nancy Drew book. Jojo had the acting skill he needed, but he had to be very light. So, he was weighed on a scale and was light enough. Jojo was so happy. To get into character, he carried around a magnifying glass. Jojo was great in the movie and became a world famous movie star.

The burglars were ready to enter the pyramid. They put on their masks and started to sneak over to the pyramid. They went past a flock of sheep, up a mountain, then down a hill. The burglars were about out of breath when they reached they entered the gigantic building. They found some hieroglyphics on the wall, pulled out their magnifying glasses, and translated from their book. ”It said follow the stars!” So they had to get plane tickets. As their bags got weighed on the scale their bags were examined and gold was found so the warning light bulb went off and they were taken to jail. The treasure was never found.

Why We Need to Raise The Expectations in the Classroom

Some basic brain research to support what I keep preaching in class about your Google Presentations.

This research comes from John Medina in his book, Brain Rules

Rule #4: We don’t pay attention to boring things

• Slides with lots of words are BORING! You know this so why do you continue to make these slides?

Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses

• Hear a piece of information and three days later you remember 10%

• Add a picture and you will remember 65%

Key Points

• Structure presentation around meaning and the big picture

• Don’t start with the details. Start with the key ideas

• Clean up your presentation. Too many words

o Slide are boring

o Nobody wants to read a bunch of words on the screen

*As I shared on all presentations, how would your presentation look if I deleted sentences and slides with too much info? Could you pull off your presentation in a persuasive manner?

I provided this feedback to all my groups in my latest project in my class.

Why is it that even though the students hate boring presentations with lots of words and a monotonous speaking voice they turn around and do the same thing?

Can anyone explain this to me? Is it because it has been what they have always done? Can they not think on their own two feet anymore?

It drives me nuts. Hence the reason I have now banned PowerPoint from any class activities and projects.

Students need to learn how to deliver the goods. Be persuasive, be passionate about their work, be organized and prepared.

Students need to learn to begin to think in new ways. We as teachers need to quit doing the same things over and over because it is not fresh. This is hard to do when we are being forced to be robots and teach the same way at the same time, but we must fight this.

Be original. Be creative. It is the way of the future people. If you don't know how to ask the right questions, problem solve, and be creative, then the future is not looking good for you.

Students it is time to step up to the plate and begin to realize your potential.

Teachers it is time for us to change the way we teach and how we teach to provide students a chance to realize their potential.

Student Learning

I was going through and grading some online collaboration work recently on a wiki project I experimented with and a student left this message for his other group members. They had to collaborate for a final presentation using Google Docs. This message cracks me up. It goes to show that slowly and very slowly students are finding ways of adapting to one another to get a message across. Either that or they really are bad spellers!!

Here is the message. I love the sarcasm.

Hay guys. I fownd a couple of speling  erors on this paje. Try to spel corektly nekst time. Thainks.  I reely dont think that yuo shoold be tiping in things that arent not speled corektly. speling is verry imporrant in these cinds of projekts. thaks!

“What is your favorite literary character of all time?” - Giveaway

This is so not my original idea or thought, but one that I have always wanted to do. I just signed up for a book giveaway that posed this question and I spent too much time going through the comments making notes of books and characters to add to my TBR pile which is rather ridiculous at this point.

I thought I would ask the same question to spur some excitement over here on my blog. I have tons of books to giveaway so this giveaway will be for three lucky winners.

All you have to do is answer the question.

“What is your favorite literary character of all time?”

Leave a comment with your answer along with the book series and why you like that person so much.

Don't forget to leave an email for me to contact you at in case you win.

Feel free to spread the word on Twitter, FB, and any other place.

Here is the list of books for you to choose 3 books from if you win. Three winners will choose three books each.

For me here is what I would choose:

I am going to go with Kilgore Trout even though it was tough with some John Green characters and maybe even the dreaded Henry Chinaski of Charles Bukowski novels.

*This is all due to change upon completion of Game of Thrones*

I will choose three lucky winners on June 1st

Ava Lynn Maurer becomes my 1000th Post

Can you believe this is my 1000th post? I cannot believe I have wasted your time with so many useless things. Actually I hope you have been able to find something useful or entertaining over the course of these last few years. This blog has emerged and evolved many times, but throughout it all is has kept the essence of who I am: Nerdiness and enjoying life while pushing myself to achieve new goals and achievements. Thank you for reading my posts if you are a follower or reader. I appreciate it very much. As much as this blog is for myself it is nice to be able to share things with others with similar thoughts and ideas.

What better timing than to share something special with all of you for my 1000th post. I was worried that I would not have anything worthwhile when I got to this point. Actually I never thought this blog would last this long. I have the perfect thing to share for my 1000th post. My new daughter, Ava.

On a side note, I am announcing the winner of the 40 book giveaway tomorrow and starting a new giveaway also. Be on the lookout.

I am also starting up my new training plan for my summer races. This will all be unveiled later in the week.

Now, time for Ava

You know it was coming.

Addyson and Ava my two crazy daughters!!
A video about Ava. This is just a little video showcasing some more photos and videos of Ava. You know there is going to be many more. It is just who I am. The nerd in me cannot resist making videos.

Ava is already a deep thinker.....or she cannot stand my coffee breath
Of course I had to share in my reading interests to Ava

Ava and I having a moment together

My favorite quote of the week comes from my daughter when she told me this about Ava:

"Her hair is as soft as ice cream."

How awesome is that? Words cannot describe any better way especially when it comes from your own kids.

Here is the video. I might have to use one of these pictures as my new avatar for all my online stuff. I love being a father even if it costs me my sleep.
